MONUMENT — El Paso County Sheriff's Office deputies involved in September's fatal shooting of 20-year-old David Page in Monument have been cleared of any charges, according to the 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office.

Monument police officers and El Paso County deputies were called to the 200 block of 2nd Street just after 3 p.m. Sept. 29 after receiving calls that a person was firing an air assault rifle at pedestrians and vehicles from inside a residence.

The 20-year-old was killed after pointing a B-B gun at the SWAT members. His family said he struggled with mental illness, which they say the Monument Police knew about and that there should have been other ways to safely de-escalate the situation.

The mother of a man killed during a standoff in Monument during late 2019 is asking for changes after the deputies involved will not face charges.

Crystina Page, the mother of the 20-year-old victim David Page, says she had warned El Paso County Sheriff’s Office that same day about her son’s mental health issues prior to the deadly encounter. Now, she wants local law enforcement to find alternative ways of dealing with mental health crisis interventions.

Marley was a four year old Red Eared Slider turtle. He was David Page's best friend.  On September 29 2019, as SWAT responded to a noise complaint at David's home in Monument, Marley was their first casualty, moments before shooting David five times and hitting him three. David and Marley were both dead at the scene.
